Description
Confederate General mortally wounded at Gettysburg
Confederate General Paul Jones Semmes Retained Draft Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 7.75" x 10"; Columbus, Georgia; February 7, 1861. Marked "Copy" at top, Semmes hurriedly pens a letter to Colonel H.C. Wayne: "I hand you herewith enclosed a letter recd. From Cooper & Park Nyk of date 2 inst. relating to gun carriages &c. &c. &c.& a copy of my acknowledgement." Signed "Paul J. Semmes." Semmes adds a filing docket on the verso.In addition to being a prominent banker and planter in Georgia, Semmes served as an officer in the Georgia State militia for decades prior to the outbreak of the war. He was tapped by Georgia governor Joseph E. Brown as quartermaster for the state in 1860 and was authorized to make all military purchases. He was promoted to brigadier general in March 1862. He was mortally wounded while leading a charge at the Battle of Gettysburg.
Condition: Flattened folds, with toning and a few stray stains. Bits of paper loss along right edge and at top margin not affecting any text. Left edge is a bit rough, likely from the removal of the integral page.
