Description
Civil War Diary of Private Edwin McComb Covering the Final Days of the Civil War. Specifically January 12 through April 1, 1865, with information about McComb's participation at the Siege of Petersburg. The Union soldier writes his entries in ink, some of which have faded, though all appear legible. At the age of twenty-one, Edwin McComb of Seneca, New York, enlisted in August 1862 and mustered into Company B, 126th New York Infantry, Army of the Potomac. By the time he began this diary, he had been a POW (1862) and had been wounded at Morton's Ford, Virginia, (February 1864). The young soldier enters his first entry on January 12, after returning from furlough. Later in some of his March entries, he reports on his activities at the Siege of Petersburg "on the skirmish line" where on March 30, he "drove the Johnnies from the plank Road." The next day he took part in a "hard fight" where the Union "drove the enemy chord 1 ½ miles. Our loss was 3 officers & 7 men." In his final entry on the following day, he reports "There is no fighting to day except the pickets."
The entries are rich with the daily details of camp life, which often included "hash" or "codfish" for breakfast, picket duty, inspections, and drill. On one of the final pages of the diary, the Union soldier has written in ink, "The property of Edwin McComb Company F 126 New York State Vols. And if lost the finder will please format to Mr. Henry McComb Flint Creek Ontario County N.Y." Private McComb mustered out on June 3, two months after his final entry.
Many of the final pages of the diary contain annotations, various lists, and financial records written in pencil, all likely post-war. Toned pages with some soiling; an overall size of 3" x 5". The January 3rd entry has paper loss resulting in the loss of some text.
