Description
Civil War and Reconstruction: Frank C. Lovejoy Archive, dated between June 7, 1863, and March 23, 1874. This archive contains numerous letters and documents, many regarding charges brought against Union 1st Lieutenant Frank C. Lovejoy of the 3rd Regiment Cavalry U.S. Colored Troops. After the war, Lovejoy became a carpetbagger; this archive also includes documents regarding the post-war details of Southern plantations with connections to him.In late 1864, Lovejoy was accused of improperly enlisting recruits and overstaying a leave of absence. Many Civil War-dated letters and documents in this archive concern these accusations, including those written on Lovejoy's behalf, praising his service. (1st Lieut. Lovejoy mustered into the 3rd Regiment on October 18, 1863, the date of the regiment's original organization. He resigned in November 1864.) Others are letters of introduction and nominations for promotions. These letters and documents are signed by various officers, including Frank C. Lovejoy, Embury D. Osband, Jerry B. Cook, Francis A. Cook, A. M. Johnson, and Thomas S. Redd Jr. Fair copies are also included.
Other war-dated documents include a printed military circular (dated October 17, 1864); a military pass granting permission to "proceed by Steamboat"; documents dealing with the appraisal and purchase of captured horses by officers in the 3rd U.S. Colored Cavalry; and merchant's letters (dated 1865 and written on merchant stationery).
Other letters and documents are dated during the Reconstruction Era (some as early as 1865) and give details on certain Southern plantations. One document lists the annual estimated expenses for the plantation known as Cottage Home. At this plantation for the following year, 350 acres were to be planted in cotton and 150 acres in corn. The largest expense was expected to be the workers ("Hire for 40 Field Hands 120 [per] year" was $4,800). The overseer's cost was estimated to be $1,000, while the thirty mules needed would cost $2,250. Other expenses, such as seed, implements, and clothing) are also listed. Total projected expenses equaled $12,450.
Several other letters and documents are included, such as land contracts and a poem about Civil War soldiers. All items are toned and well cared for.
