Chester Nimitz Inscribed Signed Photograph. 11 x 8 ¾ inches, no place; no date. The photograph was taken during the Japanese surrender aboard the USS Missouri, Tokyo Bay, September 2, 1945. Nimitz, Commander in Chief of the United States Pacific Fleet, is seen sitting at a large desk signing the surrender documents as the representative of the United States and is surrounded by officers of the U. S. Navy. Nimitz has inscribed the photo to H.S. Atkinson and signed, "Best wishes, C.W. Nimitz." Nimitz was a distinguished naval officer best remembered for his leadership as Commander in Chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet during World War II. Nimitz played a pivotal role in the Pacific theater, overseeing the strategy that ultimately led to the victory over the Imperial Japanese Navy.
