Carl Clausewitz Autograph Letter Signed. One page of a bifolium, 5 ¼ x 8 ¼ inches, Nortorf; January 9, 1814. Letter in German addressed to Clausewitz' cousin, Charlotte von Clausewitz, and written as an addition to an earlier letter. It reads, "I add to the enjoyable news, that my wife will arrive this evening, at the latest to morrow [sic] morning, in Emkendorf." Signed, "Carl von Clausewitz."

Clausewitz served in the Prussian military throughout the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Quickly rising in the ranks, he became known for his innovative military strategies and philosophies on war. At the time of this letter, Clausewitz served in the Russian-German Legion and fought against Napoleon's invading troops.

Condition: Creased along folds with separations at the left and right margins of both pages. Loss of paper along the very right edge of both sheets. Toning and foxing throughout. Portion of integral page right margin missing from seal. Remnants of seal in the upper left corner of the integral page verso.
