Brigadier General Anthony Wayne Autograph Document Signed. One page, 7.25" x 4.25", Camp in [South Carolina]; September 3, 1782. General Wayne signs a passport that allows a boat and its party passage to and from Charlestown [Charleston]. In full: "Permit Mr. Ladson's boat & hands to pass to Charlestown & to return unmolested, all American parties are to pay due Obedience to this pass-port. / Given at Camp this 3rd. Sept. 1782 [Signed] Anthy. Wayne BG."

In February of 1781, General George Washington ordered Brigadier General Wayne (1745-1796) to the Southern theatre of the Revolutionary War. He was in Virginia when British General Cornwallis surrendered to Washington at Yorktown, Virginia, on October 19, 1781. After Yorktown, Wayne was sent to South Carolina and to Georgia. After British forces evacuated Georgia in July of 1782, Wayne moved into South Carolina, where he was encamped when he issued this passport. The following December, British troops departed from Charleston and Wayne and his forces took control of the city. A year later, in October 1783, Congress promoted Wayne to the rank of major general. During George Washington's presidency, Wayne was appointed Commander in Chief of the U.S. Army to confront Native American tribes in the Northwest Territory.
