Anthony Wayne Document Signed, "Anty. Wayne." One page, 9" x 4.75", Detroit; October 3, 1796. Composed two months before his death on December 15, 1796, this document is addressed to John Wilkins (1761-1816), Quarter Master General of the U.S. Army, requesting him to make a payment to a Captain John Heeth. The document reads:

"Sir
Please to pay Capt. John Heeth one Thousand dollars as contingent money for conducting Indian Chiefs, Delegates from different Nations, going to Philadelphia, for which he is to be accountable to the War Department, for Indian Expenditures.
Anty. Wayne"

Anthony Wayne (1745-1796) was an American soldier, officer and statesman of Irish descent. He adopted a military career at the outset of the American Revolutionary War, where his military exploits and fiery personality quickly earned him promotion to brigadier general and the nickname "Mad Anthony." He was promoted to Major General in 1783 but retired from the Continental Army soon thereafter. After the war, Wayne settled in Georgia and briefly represented that state in the U.S. House of Representatives. After his service in Congress, Wayne returned to the Army to accept command of U.S. forces in the Northwest Indian War. His forces defeated the Western Confederacy, an alliance of several Indian tribes, at the 1794 Battle of Fallen Timbers, and he masterminded the Treaty of Greenville which ended the war. Wayne died in 1796 in Erie, Pennsylvania, while on active duty.

Condition: The document, on laid paper, has three vertical folds, two of which have been repaired by tape on verso; otherwise good.
