Description

[Slavery]. Nathan Bedford Forrest Slave Bill of Sale Twice Signed "N.B. Forrest." One partially-printed page, 8.5"x 10.75", n.p., January 7, 1857. Forrest made a fortune before the war as a planter and slave trader (a millionaire, he was one of the richest men in the South). In part: "I [signed] N.B. Forrest Have this day sold . . . to Charles B. Brame[?] . . . for Eight hundred & fifty dollars, to me paid, for slave, named Caroline aged about twenty three years . . . and I also warrant said Slave to be sound, healthy, sensible and Slave for life." Docketed on the verso. Folds are weak and separating in places. Unevenly toned, especially along the left edge, which also has a few small holes, not affecting the text. Mounting remnants on the verso.

Variously referred to as "The Wizard of the Saddle" or "That Devil Forrest", Nathan Bedford Forrest has been recognized by some authorities as the outstanding tactical genius of the Civil War. Like many other former Confederate officers after the war, he had sought to recoup his fortunes via business.
