Description
[Republic of Texas]. Pay Orders (2) for Military Service. Includes:Pay Order for Niles F. Smith. 6 5/8 x 3 3/8 inches, Houston; May 10, 1837. Made out to "Niles F. Smith assignee of Patrick S. Cornell" for "one hundred and eighteen 75/100 Dollars...for the payment of the Military." Signed by John Wyatt Moody as Auditor. Endorsed "N F Smith" on the verso.
Niles F. Smith (1800-1858) was a soldier, farmer, and businessman, who helped found the Sabine City Company alongside Sam Houston in 1839. After serving as an engineer in the Texas Revolution, Smith attended the Convention of 1836 as a delegate. There, he met and forged a friendship with Sam Houston, which later led to their collaboration in establishing the company. Smith later settled in Jefferson County permanently, where he lived as a successful farmer until his death in 1858.
Pay Order for Mark C. Ridley. 6 3/8 x 3 1/8 inches, Houston; December 1, 1837. Made out to "Mark C. Ridley" for "forty Dollars...for the payment of the Military." Signed by John Wyatt Moody as Auditor, and Elisha Marshall Pease as Comptroller. Endorsed "M C Ridley" on the verso.
Condition: Both orders exhibit some age-toning; Niles Smith order slightly darker. Niles Smith order cancelled in ink through Moody's signature; light, scattered staining; a touch of loss at the top left corner. Mark Ridley order cancelled in ink through Pease's signature.
