Description
[Gettysburg Casualty]. Union General Stephen Weed: Carte de Visite and Endorsement Signed. Gen. Weed is featured in a 2.5" x 4.25" vignetted waist up portrait wearing civilian clothing and facing slightly to his right. The image shows light scattered foxing and is bent in the upper right corner, cracking the image in two places. Minor loss of paper at the upper right corner. Lower right corner is also bent, but does not affect the image.With the photograph is a 3.25" x 2.5" clipped endorsement signed "Stephen H. Weed / Brig Genl: Comdg Brigade" and dated June 22, 1863. Slight ink smudging does not affect the signature.
Stephen Weed (1831-1863), a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy, was a veteran of the Seminole Wars, Bleeding Kansas, and the Utah War when the Civil War broke out. Commissioned a captain in Battery I, 5th U.S. Artillery, he participated in the Peninsula Campaign and was engaged at Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville. One month before the Battle of Gettysburg, he resigned from the regular army and became a brigadier general in command of the 3rd Brigade, Second Division, Fifth Army Corps. He was killed during Gettysburg while in defense of Little Round Top.
