Mathew Caldwell Signed Discharge. One page, 7 ¾ x 4 ¼ inches; Head Quarters, Gonzales; June 16, 1839. The discharge reads: "This is to certify that M. L. Bebee enlisted [in] the Ranging services of the Republic of Texas under my command on the 16th March 1839 and has discharged the duty of a soldier and is hereby honourably discharged said Bebee is Thirty years of age..." Signed, "Mathew Caldwell." President Mirabeau Lamar tasked Caldwell with raising a company of rangers for the defense of Goliad earlier in the year. Caldwell signs this discharge for one of the men who joined those ranks.

Caldwell signed the Texas Declaration of Independence as one of the two delegates from Gonzales.
