Description
Mariano Arista Letter Signed. Two pages of a bifolium, 8 3/8 x 10 5/8 inches, Headquarters, "Villa de Hoya [?];" October 18, 1840. A letter to the prefect of Linares regarding the rebel factions of the short-lived Republic of Rio Grande. In part: "I am greatly pleased by the zeal and activity with which you and the Justice of the Peace of Galeana have committed yourselves to monitoring the movements of the enemies of the Fatherland, and even to defending yourselves in case they attempt to threaten those towns."
He then informs him about the advance of enemy troops and the latest skirmishes: "Indeed, the rebels arrived on the 16th at the Valley of Purísima, from where they proceeded to El Cedral. However, Colonel Don Manuel Romero is in pursuit of them, and just last night I received word that he has taken part of their horses and some of their pack animals, capturing two prisoners. Many have scattered, to the point that today their gathered force does not exceed 180 men." He closes the letter advising that he plans to arrive by the 21st of October. Signed, "Maro Arista."
By November 1840, the Republic of the Rio Grande had collapsed. With centralist victories at Santa Rita de Morelos, Aguaverde, and Saltillo, support for the rebellion dwindled. Linares's allegiance to Mexico's central authority helped contain and ultimately crush the separatist uprising.
Arista would later adopt moderate federalist views. He was elected president by Congress in late 1850, largely due to his success as a military leader and his alignment with moderate liberal reforms.
Condition: Ink erosion affecting some letters but retaining legibility. Rough edge along right at bottom, resulting in some loss of text. Flattened folds and light creasing, ink stains on verso of blank integral sheet. Previous dealer annotations in pencil at top right.
