Description
Louis XIV Document Signed. One page, 17 ½ x 8 inches, St. Germain-en-Laye; January 30, 1679. A document delaying the collection of debts from the Duke of Gesvres. It reads, in part, "Louis by the grace of God, King of France and of Navarre. To the first court officer or agent on this order. We mandate and command you by these present signed in our hand, that the Delay, of which the excerpt is here attached, with the counter-seal of our chancellery, given today in our Counsel of State, we agree to the request of our cousin the Duc de Gesvres, you serve notice to all whom he belongs, and make for the entire execution of this here, all necessary acts and exploits without request for other permission." Signed, "Louis."At the time of this order, Léon Potier held the title of Duke of Gesvres. The Potier family had risen to prominence during the reign of Louis XIII and despite their elevated status, experienced significant financial difficulties by the end of the seventeenth century. Here, Louis XIV honors the Potiers' loyalty by offering a stay on the collection of their debts.
Condition: Creased along irregular folds and lightly wrinkled throughout. Toned along the margins. Portion of the document missing along the lower right corner, not affecting text.
