Manuscript document signed by Colonel Loammi Baldwin of the 26th Massachusetts Regiment, titled "The account of Guns Bought by Lt. J. Noyes of the 26 Regt for the use of the United Colonies agreeable to General Orders of [blank] day of Jany. 1776", in which he writes "Received (in behalf of the United Colonies) Lt. John Noyes the above mentioned thirty eight Guns for the use of the continental Army the price of each gun set down against the number which is marked on the breech of each gun the whole amounting to Eighty Seven pounds, Seventeen Shillings & six pence."

Second Lieutenant John Noyes and other officers of the 26th Massachusetts Regiment were sent into the surrounding countryside of Boston to locate and purchase guns for the Siege of Boston. The left side of the document contains five columns of figures representing guns and bayonets purchased with prices. On the right side, written vertically, is Baldwin's signed statement. It is accompanied by two striking steel cut engravings. The first features General Howe evacuating Boston by Virtue & Yorston, circa the 1860s, and the second is a vignette illustrating the arrival of General Knox with artillery by G.P. Putnam.

Loammi Baldwin (1744-1807) was born in Massachusetts; he was a noted American engineer, politician, and soldier in the American Revolutionary War. On April 19, 1775, Baldwin commanded the Woburn militia at the Battle of Lexington and Concord as a major. He enlisted in the 26th Continental Regiment, and rapidly advanced to the rank of lieutenant-colonel. In August 1775, he was appointed commander of the regiment, and was soon commissioned colonel. Baldwin and his men remained near Boston until the end of 1775 and were sent to New York City in April 1776. Baldwin and his regiment were with General George Washington when he and his army crossed the Delaware River to the New Jersey side on the night of December 25. They fought at the Battle of Trenton on the morning of December 26. Baldwin resigned his command in 1777 due to poor health.

The 26th Continental Regiment was organized in January 1776 and was at commanded by Colonel Samuel Gerrish of Newbury, Massachusetts. Gerrish was dismissed from the service for cowardice and in August 1775, command of the regiment passed to its next senior officer, Lieutenant Colonel Loammi Baldwin. He was promoted to the rank of Colonel on January 1, 1776. The regiment participated in the lifting of the siege of Boston from April 1775 to March 1776. General Howe and his British forces evacuated the city on March 17, 1776, and sailed to Canada.
