Lee Harvey Oswald Warns His Brother: "the Russians, Read all letters going in and out"

Lee Harvey Oswald Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages, 5.5" x 8", [Minsk, Russia], July 14, [1961]. Oswald writes to his brother Robert L. Oswald about his efforts to get out of Russia: "On the 8th of July I and my wife went into the American Embassy, I cannot write you what went on there, because the Russians, Read all letters going in and out. But anyway I have the American Passport and we are doing everything we can to get out... The Russians can be crule [sic] and very crude at times. They gave a cross -examination to my wife on the first day we came back from Moscow, they know everything because they spy, and read the mails, but we shall continue to try and get out... As for your package we never received it, I suppose they swiped that to [sic], the bastards."

Oswald had defected to the Soviet Union in 1959. His application for citizenship was declined, and his initial zeal for Communist Russia vanished as is evident from this letter. He and Marina finally succeeded in their efforts to leave the Soviet Union, arriving in the United States in the fall of 1962.

This letter is referred to and quoted in the Warren Report, Appendix 13, "Biography of Lee Harvey Oswald". Written on two sheets, with flattened folds and some toning.
