Description
King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella I Document Signed. One page, 10.3" x 12.4" (sight); Truxillo; February 25, 1479. A Royal Order issued to the heirs of Don Juan de Acuña, Duke of Valencia, commanding his sons to present themselves in Court at Valencia within thirty days of the date of the document. They are commanded to answer to charges of treason brought against their father, Juan de Acuña, now deceased. Acuña was accused of revealing secrets to Portugal during the War of Castilian Succession that brought Isabel to the throne of Castille. Signed "Yo el Rey" (the King) and "Yo la Reyna" (the Queen). The royal seal and signatures of the Royal Council are on the verso.During the War of Castilian Succession, many of the Spanish nobility were fickle in their loyalty, and many, like Acuña, supported Portugal who was supporting Isabella's rival for the Castilian throne. As the war neared its end, Ferdinand and Isabella moved quickly through the use of the courts to break up the power of the feudal lords, establishing centralized rule, and uniting Spain for the first time in over 700 years.
A partial transcription prepared sometime in the 18th Century accompanies the document, copies of related correspondence with an archivist in Trujillo and notes prepared by collector who extensively researched the manuscript are included. Framed with double-sided plexiglass to an overall size of 16" x 18.25".
Condition: Small light stain at center, "v" shaped tear at top with no loss of paper. Document appears to be housed in Mylar, ensuring its protection from any adhesives in matting. A few light stains on verso.
