Description
Juan Nepomuceno Seguin Signed Interrogatories. One full page with a notary signature on a second partial page, 7 ¾ x 12 ¾ inches; Guadalupe County; October 28, 1854. A series of questions regarding his various official positions in San Antonio, then under Mexican rule, in Edward Dwyer v. Thomas McGee. Seguin states: "In the year 1828 I was Regedor Decano of the Ayuntamiento of San Antonio and in that same year I exercised the functions of Alcalde and in 1834 I was Political Chief of the Department of Texas... In those years the Alcaldes by virtue of a decree of the Legislature of the State had the power to issue Titles of land not belonging or included in the area of the coloneys..." In response to cross examination, Seguin states that: "No authority had to confirm previous titles if they had been issued by proper authority." Signed, "Juan N. Seguin."A notary signs on the second [partial] page next to a Bexar County seal. The two pages are joined at top with a ribbon.
Juan Nepomuceno Seguín (1806-1890) was born in San Antonio and served in the military on the side of Texas independence and later in the army of the Republic of Texas. He was at the Alamo serving under Travis but was sent out on courier duty and avoided being killed along with the small force on March 6, 1836. He led the only company of Texas Mexicans in the Battle of San Jacinto and accepted the Mexican surrender of San Antonio two months later.
Condition: Flattened folds, with a bit of offset at bottom from the ribbon binding the pages.
