Description

John Warren Humane Society Document Signed. One page, 15.25" x 9.5", Boston; March 2, 1801. A partially printed document admitting "Capt Thomas Dennie of Boston a member of the said Society, granting him all the rights and privileges thereunto belonging." Signed by John Warren as President and John Avery as Secretary. Paper seal intact. Warren served as a physician during the Revolutionary War, working at the Continental Army hospital in Boston until 1782. He was the first faculty member appointed to the newly founded Harvard Medical School. The Humane Society of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts was founded by Warren in 1791. His brother was the Revolutionary War hero, Joseph Warren.

Condition: Folds weak with some areas of loss. Several small closed tears have been repaired on verso with tape. .75" closed tear touching the first letter of the first name in the signature. Lightly rubbed with some uneven toning. Pencil notation in upper left corner of recto.
