Description

John D. Imboden Autograph Letter Signed Regarding Plans to Ambush a Union Foraging Party. Two pages, 5.75" x 8.5", Shenandoah Mt.; December 17, 1862. Addressed to Col. Henry B. Davidson while Imboden was a colonel with the 1st Virginia Partisan Rangers, later known as the 62nd Virginia Mounted Infantry. In this letter Imboden informs Davidson of the Union numbers that have moved into Petersburg and his plans to ambush some while they are foraging near Moorfield. It reads in part: "I can now inform you precisely of the state of affairs at Petersburg & Moorfield. One of my Lieuts, sent out there to ascertain the facts has returned. He pushed his investigations to the camps of the enemy...ascertained that at Petersburg they have in round numbers 1200 Infantry, a Battery of guards & one Co. of Cavalry. At Moorfield they have about 300 Infantry & Cavalry in about equal numbers. Two of my Cavalry Companies will start tomorrow to...harass the Yankees in these camps. They are collecting grain & supplies & I intend to break it up by surprising their foraging parties about Moorfield...I hope they may draw the Yankees after them into Pendleton where I can fall upon them with a large force." Signed, "J. D. Imboden Col / Comdg." From the Military Archive of CSA General Henry B. Davidson.
