Description

James Knox Polk Document Signed as President. One page, 8" x 10.5", Washington [D.C.]; January 5, 1846. The document reads as follows: I hereby authorize and direct the Secretary of State to affix the Seal of the United States to 'the remission of penalty incurred by the Master of the Brig 'Corinth' for violation of the Revenue Laws' dated this day, and signed by me: and for so doing this shall be his warrant. James K. Polk."

James Knox Polk pardoned, commuted or rescinded the convictions of 268 people during his term as president of the United States. This document concerns one of them.

Together with an autograph letter signed by J. H. Powell to President James K. Polk, one page (of a bifolium), with an integral address leaf, 7.5" x 9.5", Yazoo, Mississippi; July 6, 1847. Powell writes the president concerning his application for a commission to raise a regiment of soldiers for the Mexican War.

Condition: The document has two horizontal folds, plus paper loss around the top and two sides; otherwise good. The letter has the usual folds, paper loss on the address leaf where the seal was broken, and bleed through due to gall ink; otherwise good.
