Description
William Fargo Oil Company Stock Certificate Signed "Wm. G. Fargo" as president of the Queen City Oil Company of Buffalo. One certificate, 10" x 6.5", July 31, 1865, Buffalo, New York. With stamp to far left and blind embossed seal underneath. William George Fargo (1818-1881) was an early express mail pioneer. In 1850, he partnered with Henry Wells to form the express mail company American Express; Fargo later served as its second president. Two years later, the partners formed Wells, Fargo & Company, which moved express mail from the Atlantic to the Pacific. During the Civil War, Fargo served as mayor of Buffalo.
