Description
John D. Rockefeller Standard Oil Trust Stock Certificate Twice Signed "J. D. Rockefeller" and issued to the oil tycoon. Countersigned by Henry M. Flagler as secretary and Jabez Bostwick as treasurer. One page, 15" x 7.75", n.p., April 5, 1882, engraved in black and green ink. Magnificent engraved stock certificate entitling Rockefeller to 5,000 shares of Standard Oil Trust stock. The intricate borders and corner decorations are offset by a large, handsome vignette of the U.S. Capitol. Rockefeller, Flagler, and Bostwick have all signed in bold, black ink in the lower margin. In the left margin, Rockefeller has again signed, verifying that he had received the certificate. The verso is equally attractive, entitled "For Value Received."In 1870, American industrialist John D. Rockefeller (1839-1937) organized Standard Oil Company, which soon became a monopoly in the oil industry. Standard Oil Trust formed in 1882 but was forced to dissolve in the 1890s under the Sherman Antitrust Act.
