Description

Humphrey Davy Autograph Letter Signed "H Davy". Two pages, 5" x 7.75", n.p.; undated circa 1818. A letter addressed to an unnamed friend, in which Davy writes to wish his friend a safe journey. It reads, in part: "I am indisposed & obliged to write in bed. I have taken the liberty of sending in letter packet of letters which to save you trouble I have addressed to one person who will distribute them. I regret that I cannot take leave of you in person, but I wish you a very pleasant journey & pack a [illegible] campaign as will interest you without calling for too much of your time or any [illegible] of health."

Sir Humphry Davy (1778-1729) was an English chemist and inventor best known for his discoveries of several alkali and alkaline earth metals, including potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, and boron. During the year that this letter was written, Davy was experimenting on pieces of Herculaneum papyri.

Condition: Usual mail folds with additional light creasing. Light toning and creasing at edges and corners. Overall very good.
