Description

George Washington Carver Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages, 8 1/2 x 11 1/4 inches, "Tuskegee Institute," Alabama; November 19, 1931. An affectionate letter from Carver to Ralph Douberly, a friend and poet whose work Carver reviewed. Signed, "G.W. Carver."

In part: "Dear, this is a charming poem, and carries out the thought with refreshing clearness. This poem to my mind is the prettiest one you have written...There are only two verses in which the thought seems not quite clear enough. When you come over I want to take these two verses up with my dear, handsome boy. The poem shows that you have caught the spirit, in thought, arrangement and expression. With so much love and good wishes for my dear boy, your progress makes me so very happy."

Carver mentored many young men throughout his life, both Black and white, though his primary focus was on uplifting African American students. Carver's mentorship extended to advising young men on personal and professional matters, encouraging them to pursue their dreams and make meaningful contributions to society.

With original transmittal cover.

Condition: Smoothed folds, very light foxing throughout.
