Description

George W. Carver Autograph Letter Signed. Three pages, 8.5" x 11", December 25, 1932, written on two sheets Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute letterhead. A letter to Harry Ittner, a former student of Carver's. Written on Christmas Day, reflecting on the Depression and society at large. In part: "We cannot go on this way much longer, what will be the outcome no one can say. Yes, I have heard a little of Technocracy, I never knew just what it meant before. It is wise for my group of dear boys to keep an eye on the development and workings of their group. Your Father has some excellent ideas also. We must find a way out and that very soon. All branches of business have suffered more or less, and some are still doing to the wall...There is a new epoch upon us, to my mind, and you dear young people will have to make a study of the coming events which are casting their shadows before. As I see in the world is living too much upon exciting entertainment, the thrill life if you please, all this seems destructive to healthy constructive thinking. There are too few studying the major problems that are confronting the world. I thank God for my dear boy 'Harry' every day, you are a positive comfort to me. One of the unemployed came to me the other week a man who used to be in good standing, but lost all and could not find work. He conceived the idea of making soap, I corrected his formula for him and he has a splendid soap made practically from waste... G. W. Carver."

Condition: Usual mail folds, very light toning at top and bottom edges. Stray stains on second sheet, otherwise, very good.
