Albert Einstein Typed Letter Signed "A. Einstein," one page, 8.5" x 11". Princeton, New Jersey, December 3, 1940. To an unidentified cousin. In German with full English translation. In part, "I am very happy about the good news and enclose a general recommendation letter. Unfortunately I don't know anybody in San Francisco whom I could contact in your matter. I advise you however to visit engineer Erich Marx (from Karlsruhe)...He is also in a rather modest situation, but he knows this country and perhaps he has some ideas or personal connections which could be helpful to you...If Anneliese has such a good job at the moment, perhaps she should not give it up to join you in San Francisco. If you want me to I will gladly write to the Committee so that this case is not treated in the normal routine way. Unfortunately my affidavits have always been turned down lately because I have already submitted too many. Perhaps it would be better if your son quotes me as a reference and informs the people in question that I guarantee his reliability..." Einstein's cousin wished to come to the United States and work in San Francisco. The International Rescue Committee had been formed in 1933 at Einstein's request to aid refugees fleeing Germany.
