Albert Einstein Signed and Dated Gelatin Silver Matte
Double-Weight Custom Print. 16 x 11 ¼ inches, 1945. Signed on
recto margin, "Albert Einstein. 1945." Signed by the

Ewing."Signed and dated by Einstein in 1945, the Harris & Ewing gelatin silver portrait was originally taken in 1921 during Einstein's first trip to the United States. Perhaps one of the most brilliant minds in modern history, Einstein made groundbreaking contributions to both theoretical physics and our understanding of the universe. In 1905, he published his theory of special relativity, demonstrating the equivalence of energy and mass and revolutionizing our understanding of space and time. Later, in 1915, he published his theory of general relativity, which described gravity as the warping of spacetime. Einstein's work laid the foundation for much of modern physics and earned him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921.
Although not directly involved in the Manhattan Project, he played a critical role in alerting the U.S. government to the potential of nuclear weapons. As a result, he became increasingly concerned about the devastating power of atomic bombs and the ethical implications of their use. After the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945, Einstein, along with other scientists, became an advocate for the peaceful use of atomic energy and lobbied for international control of nuclear weapons. His efforts to promote nuclear disarmament and his commitment to the cause of world peace continued to be a significant focus in his life until his death in 1955.
Condition: With slight silvering, toning to upper quadrant, undulations along the top margin edge. Fine.
