Horatio Gates Revolutionary War Payroll Abstract Signed ("Horatio Gates") With Rank. Two pages of a bifolium, 8" x 12.25", "Headquarters in Providence"; May 14, 1799. "An Abstract of the Wages" due to the field staff and companies of Colonel Archibald Craig's regiment for the period of January 16 to February 16, 1779. The document lists nineteen officer and the wages that are due to them. On the second page is an endorsement directing them to pay Walter Channing, pay master, the sum of "four thousand two hundred and six dollars and twelve seventy seconds of a dollar." Gates signs the order adding his rank, "Horatio Gates / Major General." Accompanied by a hand colored engraving of Gates mounted on a horse. Engraving measures 8" x 10.75".

Condition: Age toned with uneven edges. Evidence of repairs made to two folds of the integral sheet. Docketed on the verso. Engraving has few light spots of foxing.

More Information: Horatio Gates (1727-1806), born in England and later moving to Virginia, served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, achieving the rank of major general, the rank he had when he signed the document offered here. Gates is best known for leading American forces in the major victory against the British in the Battle of Saratoga in 1777.
