Description
Henry L. Benning Autograph Letter Signed "Henry L. Benning." Two pages of a bifolium, 9.75" x 7.75", Decatur (Georgia), August 25, 1854. Addressed to his wife. Written during his time as associate justice on the Georgia Supreme Court, he writes his wife to complain that in two weeks they have only disposed of 18 out of 57 cases. As fall is approaching he also gives her advice on how to protect her and the children from colds. Henry Lewis Benning (1814-1875) was a lawyer, legislator and served as a general in the Confederate army during the Civil War. He served with some distinction at Gettysburg and the Battle of Chickamauga, where he had two horses shot out from under him. Ft. Benning is named in his honor.Condition: With old smoothed fold creases. Minor toning to paper. Small hole, not affecting text, where the wax seal was opened.
