Description

Harper Lee: Two Greeting Cards Signed with a Pair of Earrings. Tipped onto the inside front cover and the front free endpaper of Carter Ratcliff's book, John Singer Sargent, are two greeting cards written and signed by To Kill a Mockingbird author, Harper Lee, to her friends Bill and Doris Leapard. In the first, addressed to "Doris," she writes: "Mr. Tiffany don't have none of these critters (only penguins and owls), so I done some trading next door at Mr. Trump's tower. If you have 1,000 of these, please give them to Frances. Her name may be Wright, but she's a right Leapard! I love you, [signed] Nelle." The second, addressed to "Bill," reads: "You and Doris devote your lives and talents to things of beauty and good report. If there were an aristocracy in this country, you'd lead the list. Since there is none, you'll have to be content with being what you are: aristocrats of the spirit. I love you, [signed] Nelle." Both cards are affixed using clear tape.

With the book are a pair of earrings in the shape of leopard heads, given to Doris by Ms. Lee. The earrings, which measure 7/8" x 7/8" and weigh 12.30 grams, are made of silver and feature synthetic stones. "AIROLDI" is marked on the clip back.
