Description
Group of Eleven Items Signed or Issued by Notables Union Personalities. Including documents, autograph letters, a battle report, and a military commission.[Civil War]. Henry Addison Autographed Letter Signed ("H. Addison") as Mayor of Georgetown, D.C. One page of a bifolium, 12.25" x 8", Georgetown, D.C., "Mayor's Office"; November 6, 1861. Addison writes to Simon Cameron, Secretary of War, requesting repairs for "the bridge which crosses the Potomac just below the Little Falls" [Chain Bridge]. Adhered to this letter at the upper left corner verso is an onion skin copy of the response from the Secretary of War's office acknowledging and approving the request and a partially printed document signed by an engineer listing completed repairs.
[Civil War]. Drake de Kay Document Boldly Signed ("Drake De Kay"). One partially printed page, 10" x 8", Washington, D.C., "Headquarters, Department of Washington"; May 30, 1863. A document confirming furlough for a wounded soldier, signed with De Kay's distinctive bold signature, which he developed to prevent forgeries and be read easily in low light. Docketed.
[Civil War]. William D. Dixon Autograph Letter Signed ("Wm. D. Dixon"). Three pages of a bifolium, 9" x 5.5", "Camp Carter", June 9, 1861. Dixon writes to his wife of his regiment's movements, frustrations with the "hurry and wait" nature of war, his appreciation for the quality and loyalty of his colleagues, and sweet messages for the health and joy of his wife and children.
[Civil War]. John V. Dubois Military Order Signed ("John V. Dubois") as Chief of Artillery. One page, 9.5" x 7.75", Headquarters of the Chief of Artillery; December 14, 1861. A brief military order regarding the schedule for weekly artillery reports.
John Ericsson Autograph Letter Signed ("J. Ericsson"). Two pages on one leaf, 7.5" x 4.45", no place; January 6, 1860. A brief letter regarding various business ventures and admiration for the recipient's motivations to join military service. Ericsson was an inventor by trade and went on to develop a number of key ships for the Union, including the USS Princeton and the USS Monitor.
[Civil War]. Julius P. Garesché Military Commission Signed ("Julius P. Garesché") as Assistant Adjutant General. One partially printed page of a bifolium, 10" x 8", Washington [D.C.], Adjutant General's Office; October 28, 1861. A commission issued to one George H. Thomas as Colonel of the Second Cavalry. Garesché was famously beheaded by a cannonball at the Battle of Stones River.
[Civil War]. William Hoffman Document Signed ("W. Hoffman") as Commissary General of Prisoners. One partially printed page, 8" x 5.25", no place; no date [circa July 1862]. A brief document approving rations for an exchanged Prisoner of War, Daniel Sailor of Company G of the PA 98th Infantry.
[Civil War]. George M. Robeson Autograph Letter Signed ("Geo. M. Robeson") to Governor of New Jersey Charles J. Alden. Three pages of a bifolium, 9.75" x 7.75", Camden [New Jersey]; May 29, 1862. Robeson writes to the governor requesting promotion for his brother, William T. Robeson. Docketed with a note that the rest would be given "...all due consideration".
Orland Smith Autograph Letter Signed ("Orland Smith") to Colonel John P. Nicholson. Two pages of a bifolium, 8" x 10", Baltimore, March 22, 1888. A thoughtful, personal letter expressing gratitude to Colonel Nicholson for his praise of Smith and his brigade's actions at the Battle of Wauhatchie, where Smith led a successful bayonet assault up a steep hill that now bears his name. Separated along the integral fold and mounted to cardstock.
[Civil War]. Hugo Wangelin Battle Report Signed ("Hugo Mangelin"). One page, 9.5" x 7.5", "Headquarters 2nd Brig."; no date [circa late May 1863]. Wangelin pens a report documenting actions and casualties of actions in late May 1863. In part: "In answer to certain questions laid before me last night, by order of Brig Gen Ewin, I will state, that no part of this brigade was engaged at any assault on the enemy's work's on May 19.63, but that all regiments... participated in the assault of May 22... In regard to planting a flag on the parapet of the enemy's works, I will state that such a thing was not done by any regiment of the brigade..."
[Civil War]. Richard Yates Autograph Letter Signed ("Rich. Yates") as Governor of Illinois. One page, 9.75" x 7.75", Springfield [Illinois], April 11, 1864. A brief personal letter to a Union Colonel "Robert", inviting him to visit. With accompanying engraved portrait. This letter features an erroneous ink notation and notary stamp on the verso claiming the letter was part of the Lincoln Collection of William P. Brown; The Abraham Lincoln Association issued a notice on June 23, 1931 identifying documents with this notation, and accompanying Muskegon County, MI notary stamp, to be incorrectly attributed.

Condition: Creased along old folds. Light scattered foxing and soiling. Minor chipping to edges. Addison additional onion skin document and engineering document with some separation along folds. Duboi military order with a few small open tears affecting text. Yates letter partially separated along folds and repaired with cellotape on the verso. Dixon letter with minor paper loss at folds, not affecting text.
