Group Lot of Six Documents Signed by Revolutionary War Personalities. Includes:

Robert Goodloe Harper Autograph Letter Signed ("Rob: G: Harper"). One page with integral address panel, 7.75" x 10"; Washington; February 10, 1819. A brief letter to Judge McMahon about an opportunity to attend an event. Harper (1765-1825) joined a volunteer corps pf cavalry during the Revolutionary War. After the war, he became a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives, he then served as a member of the House of Representatives from South Carolina. He later served in the Maryland State Senate and then as U.S. Senator from Maryland. He is best remembered for his phrase, "Millions for defense, but not one cent for tribute" in connection with the XYZ Affair.

David Henley Autograph Document Signed ("D Henley"). One page, 7.5" x 4.5"; no place; January 20, 1797. Document reads, "Deliver twenty pounds meal and twenty pounds beef to Capt. George, a Chickasaw for himself and party." Henley (1748-1823) was a Revolutionary War officer and served as George Washington's intelligence officer and prisoner of war commandant. He burned houses in Charleston that were occupied by the British in 1776. He later had charges brought against him for cruelty to British prisoners.

William Henshaw Document Signed ("William Henshaw"). One partly printed page with endorsement on verso, 8" x 9"; Worcester; March 10, 1810. A document commanding the sheriff of Worcester to "attach the Goods or Estate of James Taylor... to the Value of eight Dollars; and for want thereof to take the Body of the said Taylor (if he may be found in your precinct) and him safely keep..." Endorsed on the verso by the sheriff. With filing docket on verso. William Henshaw (1735-1820) is credited with coining the phrase "Minuteman." Henshaw served as Adjutant General under General Artemas Ward. He saw action in the Siege of Boston in 1775, the Battle of Long Island in August 1776, and the Battles of White Plains, Trenton, and Princeton. Document is attached along the right margin to a larger sheet measuring 8" x 9.75".

Richard Howell Document Signed ("R Howell"). One page with filing dockets on verso, 7.75" x 6.25"; October 26, 1793. A pay order directing the Treasurer of New Jersey to pay Aaron Woodruff fifteen pounds, his salary for six months as attorney general. Richard Howell (1754-1803) served as a spy to General Washington; he was entrusted to gather British troop movements and report directly to Washington. As a Brigade Major in General Maxwell's NJ brigade, he fought at various skirmishes as well as the Battles of Brandywine, Germantown, and Monmouth Courthouse. After the war he was elected as a delegate from Gloucester county in New Jersey to ratify the U.S. Constitution. He served as governor of New Jersey from 1793 to 1801.

Jabez Huntington Autograph Document Signed ("Jbz Huntington"). Two pages, 7.5" x 12.25", Norwich; August 3, 1764. A land transaction in which Phinehus Holden and Zerviah Holden sell land to Joshua Lathrop. Huntington endorses the transaction and signs on the verso. Also signed by Benjamin Huntington as town clerk. Jabez Huntington (1719-1786) was the father of Jedediah Huntington. He was in the shipping business, and at the start of the Revolutionary War he lost a large amount by the capture of his vessels. During the war he served on the committee of safety and became a major general of a militia in September 1776.

James Irvine Autograph Letter Signed ("Jas. Irvine"). One page of a bifolium, 6.25" x 7.75", Westmorland County; June 20, 1788. Letter addressed to Major William Alexander transmitting directions to his home and acknowledging that he received his shipment of goods and a letter. With address leaf.

Condition: Harper letter has minor separations at folds. Paper loss at left margin and integral address cover where seal has been torn open. Henley document has ink stains on recto and verso, and some age toning. Henshaw document is mounted along the right margin to a larger sheet. With toning, heavier on verso along folds. Creasing along right margin. Howell document has chipping along the bottom and light toning that is a bit darker at the margins. Huntington document is fragile, with separations occurring at the folds. Irvine document has a small tear at one of the folds with no loss of paper. Paper loss along left margin where the seal has been torn open. A portion of the integral address leaf is missing and there is a listing of accounts on the verso.
