Description

George Washington and Thomas Jefferson Signed Three Languages Passport. One partially printed page, 12 ½ x 15 ¼ inches (sight), New London; December 14, 1793. A passport printed in French, English, and Dutch authorizing the passage of "John Brown, master or commander of the sloop called Nancy of the burthen of 56 81/95 tons or thereabouts, lying at present in the port of New London bound for West Indies and laden with Beef, Pork, beans [sic], hogs, sheep, mules, mares, poultry, & stores..." Signed, "G: Washington" and countersigned "Th: Jefferson" by Jefferson as Secretary of State. With blind embossed paper seal at center left of the document. Matted and framed to an overall size of 22 ½ x 19 ¾ inches.

Condition: Heavily toned and creased along folds. Chipping along left, top, and right margins. Very small holes and closed tears along the folds. Small tear at the lower left corner from the seal. Not examined outside of the frame. Frame backing torn at the top and bottom.
