George M. Collinsworth Document Signed. One page, 7 ¾ x 12 ¾ inches; Matagorda; August 22, 1837. Collinsworth issues a license to "an open Boat called the Polly Hopkins" registered by Howard Decrow, "to ply in any of the waters of the Republic, for such purposes as the owner or owners may see cause to employ her, not contrary to the laws of this Republic for the term of twelve months..." Signed, "Geo: M. Collinsworth / Collector D. M." Collinsworth had been nominated collector for the port of Matagorda three months earlier on May 22, 1837. With filing docket on verso.

George Morse Collinsworth (Collingsworth), originally from Mississippi, participated in the battle of Velasco in 1832. In early October 1835 he raised a company of infantry for service in the Texas Army. This infantry, numbering about fifty, captured the Mexican garrison at Goliad on October 9, 1835. Their victory successfully cut off communication between San Antonio, then in possession of Mexican forces, and the Gulf of Mexico and secured valuable arms and supplies.

Condition: Evenly toned, with flattened folds and light creasing. A few areas of dampening, affecting several words, all remain legible. Light soiling along the folds on verso.
