Description

George Jacques Danton Document Signed. Two pages, 9 ¼ x 12 ¾ inches, Paris; August 30, 1792. Decree signed by Danton as Minister of Justice that reads, "Upon petition of the municipality of Nanterre relative to the arrest of Sieur Paris, Treasurer of the House of the Missionaries of Montvalerier and of the upkeep of the property of that House, the National Assembly, after having heard its Committee on Real Property, considering that the decree of the 18th of this month has provided for the preservation of the property of lay congregations... places the person of Sieur Paris under the protection of the law. In the name of the Nation, the Provisional Executive Committee directs and orders all its administrative branches and tribunals to have these presents registered in their registers, read, published and posted in their respective departments and jurisdictions, and executed as law..." Signed, "Danton."

A prominent figure during the French Revolution, Danton played a pivotal role in the early stages of the rebellion. He was instrumental in organizing the Paris Commune and played a central role in the overthrow of the monarchy less than a month after he signed this decree. Danton left behind a controversial legacy. He is remembered for his passionate speeches, leadership during critical moments of the Revolution, and his call for a more moderate approach during the Reign of Terror. However, Danton suffered numerous accusations of financial corruption, leading to his eventual downfall. In 1794, Danton spoke out against Robespierre, was arrested, and guillotined on April 5, 1794.
