Description

Francis I Manuscript Document Signed. Two pages, 8 1/2 x 12 inches; [n.p.], 1526. Manuscript letter regarding the sommelier of the home of the King and his lodging there. Signed at conclusion in a large and bold hand, "Francoys."

In this fine document, Francis grants permission for his royal sommelier, Antoine de Roquemart, to be lodged at the King's home along with his lieutenant, and a priest [?] at Dix Ponts [10 Bridges, now Pont Remy in Northern France] in the apartments of the Captain.

Francis I (1494-1547) was a French king and the first of five of the Angoulême branch of the House of Valois who did much to promote the Renaissance arts of France. Artists such as Leonardo da Vinci and Benvenuto Cellini flocked to his court. He also fought in a series of wars against the Holy Roman Empire but is best remembered as a devoted patron of humanism and culture.

The year of this letter, Francis had joined the League of Cognac, an alliance including France, Pope Clement VII, Venice, England and the Duchy of Milan. This alliance, however, was weak and, in 1529, "the Peace of the Ladies" was negotiated by Francis' mother and King Charles V's aunt.

Condition: Expected marginal wear, prominent toned folds, and three small holes at fold intersections at middle. Francis' signature has a small hole in the "s." With foxing and soiling throughout.
