Émile Bernard. Sonnet to Maurice Denis. Autograph Manuscript Signed. "Emile Bernard." 8.25" x 10.5", n. p.; n.d. Entitled "A Maurice Denis," this sonnet, in four stanzas, is composed for Bernard's friend Maurice Denis (1870-1943).
Denis was a French painter, decorative artist, and writer, who was an important figure in the transitional period between impressionism and modern art. The last stanza begins with the lines "Believing in sublime virtue, you draw inspiration from the spirit and know heaven, I love you."

Émile Henri Bernard (1868-1941) was a French Post-Impressionist painter, writer, and poet who had artistic friendships with Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890), Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) and Eugène Boch (1855-1941) and, later, with Paul Cézanne (1839-1906).
