Eldridge Cleaver Autograph Manuscript Signed "Robin Hood".One page, 5" x 7"
No place, circa 1975
A page of notes removed from a notebook, boldly written in pencil entirely in the hand of Eldridge Cleaver. Written circa 1975, around the time he was returning from 7 years of self-imposed exile after jumping bail in 1968 while facing charges for attempted murder. During his exile he lived around the world and was often a high profile guest of communist regimes such as Cuba, North Korea, North Vietnam, and the Soviet Union. Being wined and dined by these communist regimes had the unintended consequence of disillusioning Cleaver as he was faced with the reality of the crushing poverty and lack of freedom most of the population lived with. The manuscript page offered here are examples of his disillusion. He writes: "The Communists say they are out to take from the rich and give to the Poor. They took from the rich and from the poor - in the name of the poor - and kept it all for themselves. Robin Hood."
Offered together with a "Cleaver for Congress" envelope addressed to Harry Lucas in Houston, Texas.
Condition: Slightly uneven margin along left, where page has likely been removed from a notebook. Bold pencil on bright paper.
