Description
Edward Teller Autographed Note Twice Signed. 3.5" x 8.5", Miami, Florida; November 8, 1993. Pamphlet from a conference for the Horacio Ferrer Institute attended by Edward Teller. His inscription on the back cover reads, "The Secret / Message / sent to / Los Alamos: / 'It's a boy'/ Edward Teller." A pencil inscription below the signature reads, "Nov 8, 1993 / Hydrogen Bomb Exploded / successfully." Inside the pamphlet is another inscription and signature, "To David Light / Edward Teller." A note from David Light also accompanies this lot that explains the circumstances around the signature and more details from their conversation. It reads in part, "Dr. Teller wrote this for me when we were talking about the first 'H' bomb test in the South Pacific...this indicated that the test was successful... it took 15 min. for the sound waves to travel through the earth."Pamphlet also contains signatures of Jose Barraquer and Alfred Huber along with an inscription and initial of Daniele S. Aron Rosa.
Edward Teller (1908-2003) was a Hungarian born American theoretical physicist and one of the fathers of the hydrogen bomb. Teller, along with Leo Szilard and Eugene Wigner, helped urge President Roosevelt to develop an atomic bomb program in the United States. He became one of Oppenheimer's first recruits at Los Alamos where he was a group leader in the Theoretical Physics Division in 1943. Teller was present at the detonation of the Gadget in July 1945 during the Trinity Test. He refused to lie on the ground with his back turned as ordered, choosing instead to risk watching the detonation with eye protection. He later testified against Oppenheimer at his 1954 security clearance hearing. Teller was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2003 by President George W. Bush.
