Description
Confederate General James Longstreet Autograph Letter Twice Signed. One and a half pages, 7.75" x 9.75", "Hd Qrs Near Suffolk," April 29, 1863. In April 1863, Union General Joseph "Fighting Joe" Hooker, in command of the Army of the Potomac, was preparing to move his men across the Rappahannock River. Gen. Robert E. Lee, realizing that he was vastly outnumbered, appealed to Confederate President Davis, who in turn had Gen. Samuel Cooper, the Confederate Army's highest ranking officer and adjutant general, send a telegram to Gen. James Longstreet ordering him to march to reinforce Lee.Longstreet, who since April 11 had been laying siege to the Union-occupied town of Suffolk, Virginia, wrote this letter to Gen. Cooper asking for clarification as to his orders, in part: "Our trains are all busily employed hauling out the supplies from the Counties of N.C. . . . I shall require several days notice in order to get the trains across the river that I may then withdraw my forces. I do not understand your dispatch to mean that I shall withdraw the trains at once, and cease all operations with them. I am ready to move with the forces at any moment but shall require due notice, for the withdrawal of the trains." In a postscript, Longstreet muses on the situation in North Carolina, stating: "Gen. Beauregard should be ordered to return the troops to N.C. that were sent him last winter. Otherwise the force in N.C. and this part of Va. will not be enough to hold the enemy in check." Longstreet began his march to rejoin Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia at Fredericksburg on May 4. Two months later, Union troops abandoned the town.
