Description

Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, Manuscript Decree Signed. One page, 11.25" x 8.75"; Monzón, Spain; August 22, 1537. A decree to the citizens of Florence regarding the arrest of Republican sympathizers involved in an attempted upheaval and the assassination of Alexander, First Duke of Florence (and Charles' son-in -law). Those arrested included Philippo Strozzi and Bartholome Valori, both members of the Italian nobility. Charles states emphatically his commitment to investigating the crime and ensuring that all involved are brought to justice. Signed, "Carolus".

Matted and framed to an overall size of 18.25" x 16".

Condition: Scattered foxing, with bits of paper loss along bottom and at top (affecting a single word in Charles's title in heading). Some show through from address written on verso.
