Description

Charles V Holy Roman Emperor Document Signed. One page on vellum, 20 x 8 inches, Brussels; April 1, [15]49. A proclamation by the King to sell certain goods. Signed, "yo el rey [I the King]."

By 1549, Charles V wore several crowns. In addition to being Holy Roman Emperor, he was also the King of Spain and the Lord of the Netherlands. It is in this latter capacity that he signed this document. Brussels served as one of his main residences and he likely signed this document at Coudenberg Palace, where he was first declared of age in 1515. It was also at Coudenberg where he abdicated his claim over the Habsburg Netherlands and gave it to his son, King Philip II of Spain.

Condition: Creased along folds, with minor staining and toning. There is a cut at bottom right where there are remnants of the wax seal remaining. Loss of material at lower right.
