Description
Charles Goodnight Dictated Letter. Four pages on two sheets, 5 3/4 x 9 1/2 inches, Goodnight, Texas; July 3, 1917. A letter written in pencil addressed to W. M. Hawkes on imprinted letterhead responding to an inquiry regarding an Indian attack and other notable events Goodnight had witnessed. In part (misspellings and punctuation retained): "... you have as good a story of the Wilson insident, that is his attact by the Indians, as I get could get up, it is a great deal of trouble to write such a history there four I ask you to have it put in type in syplicate, sending one to me, and one to Edmund Seymour and one for yourself, if you will do this, I will put the Loving story in type and send you a copy - this also is a long story, but is true the facts as they really accured... C Goodnight."Goodnight only received six months of formal education and could barely read or write. It is probable that this letter was dictated by Goodnight to his wife or an associate who wrote it for him.
