Charles Douglas Autograph Letter Signed. Three pages of a bifolium, 8" x 9.25", Bothwell Castle, Hamilton [Lanarkshire, Scotland]; September 22, 1827. A letter from Charles Douglas to the "Lord Chief Baron" concerning his contest with the Duke of Hamilton, probably for a seat in Parliament, and request for assistance in the election. Together with a period facsimile printing of a letter (8.75" x 14", Foreign Office [London]; November 11, 1809.) from Henry Bathurst to the Tyrolese Deputies concerning Great Britain's inability to assist the people of the Tyrol in their resistance to the armies of Bavaria and France.
Condition: The Douglas letter has the usual mail folds, soiling, and mounting remnants on verso and dinged corners. The Bathurst facsimile letter has scattered foxing and has been folded in quarters; with mounting remnants on verso.


More Information:

Charles Douglas, 3rd Baron Douglas (1775-1848), the son of Archibald James Edward Douglas, 1st Baron Douglas, was admitted to Lincoln's Inn as a barrister in 1803 and served Member of Parliament from as a Tory from Lanarkshire between 1830 and 1832. He succeeded to the title of 3rd Baron Douglas in 1844.
