Description

Space Shuttle Enterprise (OV-101) Approach and Landing Tests Crew-Signed Color Photo. An official NASA silk finish photo, S77-28961, of the Enterprise riding atop the NASA 747 plane. It is signed in black felt tip by all four: "Fred Haise", "Joe Engle", "Richard Truly", and "Gordon Fullerton". A very desirable photo. Excellent.

The Approach and Landing Tests were conducted by NASA in 1977 to determine the shuttle's flight characteristics well before any orbital flights. The first eight, three taxi tests and five captive-inert flight tests, were performed unpowered and uncrewed to verify the taxiing and flying characteristics of the shuttle while mated with its Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (a heavily-modified Boeing 747). Each of the final eight ALT tests carried a two-man crew. In the first three, known as captive-active flight tests, the shuttle remained mated to the SCA throughout the takeoff and landing. In the last five, known as free-flights, the Enterprise separated from the 747 during flight and glided to landings at Edwards Air Force Base. Fullerton & Haise and Engle & Truly were the two crews who flew these eight manned flights, the only five times the Enterprise ever flew alone.
