Description

Sir Walter Raleigh Document Signed with the rare alternate spelling "W Rawley." One page, 8.25" x 6", Isle of Wight, July 30, 1580. While the twenty-eight-year-old Sir Raleigh - poet, explorer, and soldier - waited in the English Channel on the Isle of Wight to invade Ireland, he signed this receipt for expenses related to his troops. After the successful invasion, Raleigh was the recipient of 40,000 acres, making him one of Munster's largest landholders. He retained his Irish holdings for seventeen years. Only seven years after signing this receipt, Raleigh established the ill-fated North American colony of Roanoke. Folded with docketing on verso. Toned paper with foxing. Mounting remnants along top edge. Penciled notations from a previous owner exist in the lower margin.
