Description

Patrick F. "Pat" Garrett: A Fine Handwritten Signed Letter on Sheriff's Letterhead. In July, 1897 Garrett writes from his home in Las Cruces, New Mexico to his friend H. J. "Hy" Bowles in Novalde, Texas. Bowles was part owner of a 50,000 acre ranch near Novalde, and had written to Garrett to ask if he would consider selling his herd of cows. From 1869 to 1878 Garrett had lived and worked in Texas, where the two had apparently become friends. Garrett writes that he is not interested in selling, as his cows are an ongoing supplementary source of income needed to support his family. "I want them to grow into a bunch large enough to make a living by the time I get ready to move back to Novalde," he writes. The letter includes a cryptic reference to "Noe and Chunk," apparently two mutual friends who had gotten themselves into some trouble in Texas. "I'm sorry about (the two) doing as they did," Garrett says. "It seems as if they will never quit gambling they are good hearted inocent [sic] fellows, but it seems that they have a craze for doing something that brings a blush to the face of their friends."

A fine Garrett letter with above average content, in excellent condition. 8.125" x 10.75".
