Description

Pat Garrett: Autograph Letter Signed "P. F. Garrett." Two pages, 6" x 9.5", on "The Grand Hotel" letterhead, El Paso, August 6, 1889. Written to his wife, Garrett laments the fact that he has been away from her for so long a period while on business. He writes in full:

"I wrote you yesterday morning that I expected to leave here to day thought sure Mr. [Charles] Eddy would have been here yesterday, and we could have gotten through our business so as to have started out to day, but he did not come. however I look for him sure today and we will get through with our business and start home tomorrow. if I can get off tomorrow I will be home Saturday night I give you my word that this is the last time that I will ever be away from you if you knew how I want to see you I know you would be sorry for me. I dont care what my business may be or how much money there may be in my being away from you I will never again be so long away from you until the monster death seperates [sic] us It seemes [sic] to me I can see you worrying and looking for me. Be pacient [sic] my Angel this is the last time."

Four years prior to the writing of this letter, Pat Garrett hatched a scheme to dam up the Hondo River and divert the water through a series of irrigation canals throughout west Texas and southern New Mexico. The sale of land would be minimal with the majority of the profit being in water rights. Garrett convinced New Mexico cattleman, Charles Eddy, to help finance the venture and, with the help of Garrett's former publisher, Charles Greene, the Pecos Valley Irrigation and Investment Company was born. The company would incorporate in 1888, but would eventually fail.

Light dampstaining at the right edge does not affect the text. Slight stain touches the signature which remains bold and bright. A nice glimpse into the intimate wife of Garrett and his wife.
