Description

Olympia Brown Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 5" x 7.75", Racine, Wisconsin, January 14 [no year]. Brown sends regrets in response to an invitation to travel with the unidentified correspondent's party to Washington for a convention. She writes, in part: "It would give me pleasure to join you but am unable to start before Monday morning on account of Services here on Sunday. Shall hope to meet you at the convention..." Brown (1835-1926), an American suffragist, was the first woman to graduate from a theological school, and the first full-time female ordained minister. Very fine with minor ink brushing and a light blue pencil inscription affecting a small portion of the signature. From the Judith Kaplan Women's History Collection.
