Description

Martin Luther King, Jr. Signed Program. 6.25" x 8.5" (sight); Dinkler Plaza Hotel in Atlanta; January 27, 1965. A program for a dinner given to honor Dr. King on the occasion of his receiving the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize. Signed "To Mike / Best Wishes / Martin Luther King" in blue ink.

The dinner was held in honor of Dr. King and his winning of the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize. The event was quite controversial, as it attempted to garner an interracial audience. Mayor Ivan Allen Jr. reached out to numerous influential companies run by powerful white businessmen and sought to gain their support and sponsorship; one such company was Coca-Cola. Although Allen secured the endorsements of numerous businesses, many were wary of the tension that the event might cause. Some feared that the integrated event would lead to a demonstration by the KKK outside the hotel. Thankfully, no violent or aggressive incidents arose, and the dinner was a great success. The program is matted and framed in a double frame so that both sides are visible, along with a black and white photograph of Dr. King with his family, measuring 21" x 17.5" overall.

Condition: Small spot of soiling, very faint horizontal creasing. Else, very fine.
